Scold's Prelude
It was a brisk Saturday morning
The sounds of birds chirping and children
playing is what one would come to expect
All was right, all was just. Like a dream....
Enter a man. An old man. A lonely man.
His features, distinct
White, wispy hair. A lowered brow barely
obscuring his dull tired eyes
His gaze, a piercing one
He walked with purpose despite his age
The man approached one of the mothers
She too seemed exhausted by the every day
Her child kept her up all night until the dawn
The sounds of those birds cutting through her skull
The children playing were like daggers into her heart
She hadn't slept a wink, she told the man
"I've just the thing!" He responded
The old man reached into his satchel and pulled
out an otherworldly device of torture
"Here, try this on" he insisted
"You've never known sleep like this"
As the woman placed the mask about her face,
a single tear rolled down her cheek
Her eyes slowly closed while her body fell to the ground
"You'll never lose a wink again... pleasant dreams, my dear"
